Fall is in the air.  Halloween is coming soon.  Nothing screams October more than decorating with pumpkins and gourds this time of year.
                But, there is nothing more frustrating than when the pumpkin or gourd decides to rot early and ruin your fall display.  Don’t let this happen.
                Here are a few “tricks” to help you with finding and keeping your pumpkin and gourd be longer lasting:
  1.  When shopping for the perfect pumpkin, be sure to select one that has a sturdy stem; this is a sign of a healthy pumpkin.
  2. Do not pick up or carry the pumpkin by the stem.  By doing so can damage it and make it age faster.
  3. Once home, soak the pumpkin in some cold water.  The pumpkin will absorb the water and become more firm.
  4. While the pumpkin is in the bucket of water – add a ¼ cup of bleach to the water.  Let the pumpkin stay in this solution overnight. This solution will help kill any germs or bacteria that are trying to attack the pumpkin.
  5. Remove the pumpkin from the water and let it air dry.
  6. Now you can spray the pumpkin or gourd with a sealant or a floor wax.  The sealant or floor wax coating will keep the moisture trapped and keep the pumpkin or gourd firm for weeks.  This will also give your pumpkin a shine.
  7. If making a Jack-O-Lantern, apply some Vasoline Petroleum Jelly on all cut areas. – including the inside wall.   This seals in the moisture and keeps the pumpkin moist and firm.  If a pumpkin dries out, it will shrivel.
By following these simple, but logical steps your pumpkins and gourds will stay fresh longer and possibly be attractive into November and Thanksgiving.
