IN THE DIRT with DOUG - MAY GARDENING TASKS

Here are just a few gardening and landscape tasks or projects that should be done in May:
  1.  It is now full speed ahead for planting summer blooming annuals and your vegetable garden.
  2. Lilacs should be pruned lightly after they finish blooming.  Also, now is the time to feed and lime lilacs.
  3. Once the foliage of the daffodil and tulip bulbs begin to yellow and die, now is the time to dig and divide the bulbs.  When replanting be sure to add Espoma BulbTone at the time of planting.
  4. It is ok to move houseplants outside.  One suggestion is to acclimate the plants to being outside by putting them in some shade and then gradually move out to a sunnier location.
  5. May is a good month to feed azaleas and rhododendrons once they finish blooming.  Also, this is the time to prune, if needed.  As for a fertilizer, I recommend using Espoma HollyTone.

Now that May is here, please consider planting plants that blooms and benefit our beloved bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds.  It’s just nature’s way!!!!!
