If you are like me, we tend to take Memorial Day for granted without truly thinking the importance of this special day that has been set aside to honor our fallen soldiers who have died defending our freedom.
Did you know that Memorial Day started 3 years after the Civil War ended, on May 5, 1868?  The head of an organization of Union veterans – The Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) – established Decoration Day as a time for the nation to decorate the graves of the war dead with flowers.  Major General John A. Logan declared that Decoration Day should be observed on May 30.  It is believed that this date was chosen because flowers would be in bloom all over the country.
Did you know that a poppy flower is the traditional flower to wear?  In 1920, the National American Legion adopted the poppy as their official symbol of remembrance.
In 1971, Memorial Day Observation was created.  Memorial Day is now observed on the last Monday in May, thus creating a three day holiday weekend.
So, let’s all do our part in honoring Memorial Day this year by displaying the American flag proudly and by planting some special flowers for remembrance.
