EASY HOUSEPLANTS: PHILODENDRONS and other AROIDS

Aroids, members of the Araceae plant family, contain some of the easiest and most popular of indoor plants. In addition to the Heart-leaf Philodendron (P. cordatum), relatives include the Peace Lily (Spathiphyllum), Chinese Evergreen (Aglaonema), Dumb Cane (Dieffenbachia), Pothos Epipremnum), Arrowhead Plant (Syngonium), Wax Flower (Anthurium), and more.

Indoor aroids need warm temperatures, and most will tolerate medium to lower light levels, making them perfect companions for our homes and offices. Vining aroids, such as Pothos, should be pruned periodically for fullness, while herbaceous spreaders like the Peace Lily can be divided if they grow too large. The very popular large-growing Philodendron selloum, sometimes called Tree Philodendron, maintains its best appearance when given very bright light. The exotic African Mask (Alocasia x amazonica) makes you want to touch it to see if it is silk or live. And the almost indestructible “ZZ”
plant (Zamioculcas zamiifolia) is as easy as it gets.

If you think that most of these aroids are too common to get excited about, remember why you see them everywhere…they’re great houseplants!
