Strawberry Varieties

Strawberries - Hardy Perennials that produce delicious fruit you can enjoy year after year

The fruit that every berry lover needs to have growing in their yard; Strawberries (a member of the rose family) is the only fruit with its seeds on the outside and actually has more Vitamin C ounce for ounce than citrus fruits! They have been associated with lowering cholesterol, easing symptoms of gout and digestive problems and lowering the risk of certain types of cancer.  Strawberries prefer the sun but do tolerate some shade. They do require good drainage, so they’ll benefit from adding good soil to the planting location. They work great in containers and hanging baskets or can be used as an edging plant or groundcover.  Meadows Farms carries these mature strawberry varieties in 6” pots ready to plant.

Fresca Strawberries
Fresca Strawberries are luscious, juicy and sweet. Bred in the US by one of the leading seed houses, this wonderful, new, everbearing variety is both early and long-blooming. It will produce delicious, firm, brilliant red berries all summer long.

Woodland Strawberry (Native)
A low growing perennial that produces a small delicious strawberry ripening in July. This native strawberry grows in dry to moist open woods, stream banks and meadows.

Berries Galore Strawberry
This everbearing variety can be harvested every three or four days once it starts producing. With medium-sized berries appearing in mid-summer, Berries Galore is a favorite when you want fresh strawberries in the fall. Its glossy foliage makes it a great ornamental plant in large patio pots. For best production, harvest continuously every three to four days after berries appear.

Temptation Strawberry
Sweetheart-type. Delicious Ever-Bearing Alpine Strawberries. This easy to grow variety bears good sized deep red fruit in the first season. Vigorous, compact growth makes Temptation ideally suited for hanging baskets or for use in grow bags or patio containers.

Alexandria Strawberry
Fragaria vesca produces excellent yields of juicy bright red strawberries the first year. This variety does not produce runners which allows it to be planted along with vegetables and flowers with very little maintenance. Great for containers, rock gardens and edging plants.

Care Tips/Maintenance
When planting in the ground make sure to add potting soil to your mix and mulch strawberry plants well to keep down weeds and conserve moisture. Plant the crown of the strawberry plant just above the soil level. Remove all flowers the first two months which will promote root growth in the plant and then remove the runners as they stretch out so the plant can put all its energy into producing fruit. Water as needed all season to keep soil evenly moist, keeping your eye out for the first sign of wilt. Wilting is a sure sign that your strawberries need water. Feed with an all-purpose fertilizer to ensure your bountiful harvest.
